MUSALLA OF UNITY

MUSALLA OF UNITY

The Musalla of Unity is located at a viewpoint within Cloud Park, overlooking a dramatic valley marked by a deep gorge between two mountains. This landscape condition becomes the primary generative reference for the project: the catenary profile of the portal is directly inspired by the natural curvature suggested by the mountain gap, translating the surrounding topography into an architectural gesture. The building is defined by a massive stone envelope, whose materiality and compact volumetry draw from the traditional mountain constructions of the Aseer region. Built with locally sourced stone, the wall establishes a strong tectonic presence, anchoring the musalla to the rocky landscape while framing the open view toward the valley. Within this thick, material perimeter, two plastic and strongly vertical volumes emerge. Each is open at the top, allowing natural light to penetrate through overhead light wells that shape the interior atmosphere. One volume houses the prayer space for men, the other is dedicated to women, both characterized by a quiet and contemplative spatial quality enhanced by the vertical shafts of light. The community space is instead defined by the large catenary portal itself, conceived as a shaded threshold where people can gather, rest, and share moments together while looking at the scenary. In this way, the Musalla of Unity brings together landscape, ritual, and community, transforming the monumental opening toward the valley into a place of encounter and collective presence.
